Barry’s house is not a treatment facility and is strictly a sober living environment. Admission to Barry’s House is contingent on proof of completion of a primary residential treatment program. Prior to admission guests must have obtained sobriety and be cleared by a licensed physician. We know that consistent work helping other people reinforces a guests new life in sobriety and creates a sense of fulfillment and purpose. We believe this crucial step to be indispensable to someone with a drinking or drug problem. We stress this financial responsibility at the beginning of phase three as to show our loved ones we are becoming less reliant on others and more independent. Many alumni move into the plymouth area around the program although it is not a requirement.
Having made a very solid beginning in their recovery, each guest has learned all of the tools necessary to stay sober. Now it is just a matter of living in a safe and supportive environment in which to practice the design for living. They visit detoxes and hospitals and share their experience and hope with others. They share at AA meetings what they have been doing in order to convey hope for others recovery. At this time, they have maintained steady employment and begin to realize they may be able to face life successfully.

The final phase of the program is the most subtle because we are not actively writing three hours a day or out making many of our amends. As newer guests come into the Brook Retreat they now look to guests in the phase for guidance as well as proof that they should move forward with the Twelve Step process. Being a power of example Sober companion can give guests that sense of purpose that was always missing from their lives. Many of us needed to feel as if we were a part of something much bigger than ourselves in order to stay on the path. Once having made a handful of amends all guest are required to return to work, school, or volunteer work. We provide help with this process but most importantly stress that we are here to assist and not complete this task for you.
A fresh set of clothes, a clean pair of socks or a new toothbrush can make a world of difference to a student in need. The next step is to make a commitment to working through the process. We don’t convince anyone that they should go forward with this process. If you feel you want what we have and are describing, it is your decision to move forward with the work. We believe that the “Steps” are never completed, rather that they are lifelong principles by which to live by that result in a removal of the mental obsession to relapse.
Our family way of life will provide a safe and clean environment that is ideal for continuing long-term recovery. Chelsea’s House provides a structured environment for recovering addicts to begin living their lives clean and sober outside the confines of a drug treatment center or detention center. We expect a lot from our guests, and we hold the men and women in our homes accountable for their recovery. We work closely with our alumni, the community, and other treatment centers in the area to provide endless support to the men and women who come to our homes.

MASH has been working for several years in Massachusetts to ensure that sober homes are a safe and positive environment for residents. In 2007, several sober houses in Massachusetts came together to set standards for their industry and formed MASH. Many housing programs call themselves “sober homes” and might in fact offer a healthy and sober living environment. But homes that are certified must stick to strict standards that the state can get behind. MASH-certified houses must uphold several core principles that ensure the houses are well operated, maintain the rights of residents, are recovery-oriented, and promote health. Certification is voluntary, and the Helpline refers callers only to certified homes. Five homes are currently certified as sober homes, and more homes are in the process of becoming certified by July 1, 2016.
